UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, ANN ARBOR

KELLOGG EYE CENTER

InSite was charged with a unique set of challenges when hired to design the courtyard for the expansion of the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center.  The site had two very different objectives:  to be an entry statement for the internationally renowned eye center, as well as an intimate sensory garden for users with compromised eyesight, along a busy road nonetheless.  Additionally, the site is extremely shady, as it faces north and is surrounded on the other three sides by massive buildings.

The final design successfully ties together the large buildings and provides a unique entry experience.  The space was designed to be appreciated by users of the courtyard, and also from the windows above.  Plantings focus on smell and sound throughout the growing season to provide a multi-sensory experience in a calming environment.
