Oudolf Garden

InSite served as the local landscape architect, collaborating with all-volunteer group Oudolf Garden Detroit and renowned garden designer Piet Oudolf on his public garden design for Belle Isle. Our contributions included project management, grading and site engineering, construction documentation, grant funding assistance, and working with local permitting authorities to realize Oudolf's vision.

InSite approached grading and site design with a focus on accessibility, resilience, and an emphasis on native ecosystem services. The perennial gardens are designed to withstand the unprecedented high water levels of the Great Lakes and Detroit River system, while easing the burden on Detroit's infrastructure by treating stormwater runoff from the street within a 4,000 square foot rain garden. The ecological services of the wetland on site are highlighted with the creation of additional wetland storage and a planned seeding and planting effort in 2021.
